Day 9: Nikko

Finally back in Tokyo after a few days out of town. We took a trip to Nikko, which is a beautiful town in the mountains north of Tokyo.

The first night, we stayed at a ryokan where we got to enjoy an onsen before having a great meal. We couldn't take pictures of the onsen, of course, because it is a communal bath (divided by sexes). But this one was really nice with trees all around in their fall colors.

The meal included scallops, shrimp, tuna, udon soup, and a seafood mousse with salmon eggs inside. We also got some of the tofu that they make in this region, which is made by stacking a bunch of thin tofu layers together; this makes a very different texture and is really good. We also had shabu shabu, where we cooked our own meat, vegetables, and mushrooms in the little pot you see in the top right of the picture below.
